JCall, the European Jewish network for Israel and for peace, expresses its deep concern over the announcement by the Israeli government to build three thousand new housing units in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem.
The most disturbing aspect of this decision is the project to develop the Israeli presence in the E1 area, located between Jerusalem and Maale Adumim. Such a project would break up the West Bank into two practically separate parts, and as such would prevent the creation of a viable Palestinian state with territorial continuity.
As European Jewish citizens sharing an indestructible link with the State of Israel and a deep concern for its future as a Jewish and democratic state, we have the duty to rise against an announcement which, if actually carried on, would add a new obstacle to the already struggling Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and would seriously endanger a peaceful solution based on the coexistence of two sovereign states.
