“Nuit debout” and Alain Finkielkraut

JCall condemns the shameful behaviour of  “Nuit Debout” militants who forced Alain Finkielkraut, member of the French Academy, to leave Place de la République in Paris last Saturday night (April 16th, 2016), showered with spits and insults.

Alain Finkielkraut was in 2010 one of the first well-known figures to sign our “Call to Reason”, which framed our project to “work for the survival of Israel as a Jewish and democratic State” by ensuring  the creation of “a sovereign and viable Palestinian State” beside it. Since then, he never stopped supporting our fight, and he participated to the third JCall Conference that took place in Paris on April 10th, 2016, reaffirming the importance of dialogue between people.

Those who called Alain Finkielkraut a “fascist” and forbade him to attend the debates organised  in a public place have a very different idea of a “dialogue”. In the name of democracy, it is necessary to put an end to their actions. The leaders of the “Nuit Debout” movement must break away from these shameful acts by taking the appropriate measures.
