The Hebrew phrase ‘Eretz Yisrael’ signifies a geographical entity that corresponds to the historic homeland of the Jewish people. The link with Eretz Yisrael, maintained by Jews throughout the long history of their dispersal, is one of the principal elements of the Zionist movement. Nevertheless, this link cannot justify the claim by some Jews to exclusive territorial rights over the ‘totality of Eretz Yisrael,’ because such a claim denies the individual and collective rights of the Palestinians who live there.
